Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre and Sexual Assault Services Association

Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre & Sexual Assault Services Association is located in the Kirk Building, 219 Main Street, Suite 204 (above Tim Hortons). You can drop in to have a cup of coffee, browse our library, or sit in our comfy couches. We also offer a range of services and programs to women, adolescent girls, and their families.  Check out our calendar link for current events

Our SANE Program serves Pictou county and the entire Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority.

The SANE Program is funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Health, and coordinated by the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre in partnership with Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority (GASHA) and St. Francis Xavier University (STFX). A SANE is a Registered Nurse who has advanced training and education in forensic examinations of sexual assault victims. Through this program, on-call SANE nurses provide immediate care and conduct forensic examinations of victims of sexual violence.

Our services are provided in a supportive, nonjudgmental, and confidential manner and can be obtained by calling  1-877-880-SANE(7263) or by contacting any of the following:

  • Hospital ER
  • SANE Coordinator
  • Antigonish Women's Resource Centre
  • St. FX Health & Counseling Centre
  • Your doctor

The SANE program provides:

  • Emergency response, 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Services to both females and males, 13 years of age and older
  • a sensitive and thorough sexual assault examination and forensic examination (evidence collection)
  • Expert testimony in a court of law
  • choices about whether or not to involve the police
  • information about community resources that can be accessed for ongoing support
  • Storage of forensic evidence for up to six months

Avalon Centre

Avalon Centre provides a contiuum of specialized sexual assault services. It provides counselling, supportive information and referral, and education to those who have suffered any sexual assaults. The primary emphasis is on immediate care/support, education, counselling and leadership/advocacy services for women.

Colchester Sexual Assault Centre

The Colchester Sexual Assult Centre (CSAC) is a non-profit, community based organization dedicated to strengthening and empowering survivors of adult sexual assault (ASA) and/or child sexual abuse (CSA) who are aged 16 and over. All programs and services are equally available to all genders.

The ultimate goal of the CSAC is the prevention of sexual assault and sexual abuse.

The CSAC offers many helpful programs and services including one-on-one confidential, gender-sensitive counselling and emotional support to sexual assault and sexual abuse survivors and their family and friends. See programs and services for more information.

Located in Truro, Nova Scotia, the CSAC's services are available, but not limited to, individuals in the counties of Colchester, Cumberland, East Hants and Pictou.

Pictou County Women’s Centre

At this resource centre they have available: Support counseling-one on one and referrals to other agencies as well as support and information for Lesbians. Advocacy- a member of the centre will act as a support person by accompanying women to social services, legal services etc.

Information-you will find include a lending library, pamphlets and brochures, information about other agencies and services as well as social assistance information. They provide community education, by presentations to schools and groups on women's issues, putting on workshops and programs. They also have volunteer and student placement opportunities. The programs and support groups run on a yearly basis and some of them are "Girls First", "Youth Access" and "Teen Empowerment". Call to see what is coming up, you will need to put your name on a list for the next session.
