Our SANE Program serves Pictou county and the entire Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority.


The SANE Program is funded by the Nova Scotia Department of Health, and coordinated by the Antigonish Women’s Resource Centre in partnership with Guysborough Antigonish Strait Health Authority (GASHA) and St. Francis Xavier University (STFX). A SANE is a Registered Nurse who has advanced training and education in forensic examinations of sexual assault victims. Through this program, on-call SANE nurses provide immediate care and conduct forensic examinations of victims of sexual violence.

Our services are provided in a supportive, nonjudgmental, and confidential manner and can be obtained by calling  1-877-880-SANE(7263) or by contacting any of the following:

       ►   St. FX Health & Counseling Centre

       ►   Your doctor

 The SANE program provides:

  • Emergency response, 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Services to both females and males, 13 years of age and older
  • a sensitive and thorough sexual assault examination and forensic examination (evidence collection)
  • Expert testimony in a court of law
  • choices about whether or not to involve the police
  • information about community resources that can be accessed for ongoing support
  • Storage of forensic evidence for up to six months

INTRODUCTION:

In August 1983, The Naomi Society became incorporated as a not for profit charitable organization and in May 1984 services for women and children who were victims of family violence was established.

MISSIONSTATEMENT:

The Naomi Society is a broad based community organization that preserves and promotes the safety, dignity and human rights through direct services to women and their children who are victims of family violence.  The society advocates for and provides community action programs for all individuals who are affected by family violence.  This is done with an approach that is sensitive to social, economic and cultural diversity.
 

AREA SERVED:

The municipalities of Antigonish Town, County and Guysborough County.  A geographic area of approximately 1500 square kilometres.   A population of approximately 34,458 people.

 

BOARD OF DIRECTORS:

Comprised of 12 Volunteers from the local community but only requires 6 to function as a board

Executive Director, Full Time Counsellor/Outreach Worker, Part Time Counsellor, Part Time accounting support worker, Part Time facilitor when funded.

SUPPORT SERVICES FOR WOMEN AND CHILDREN

  • Services are available for women who are living with family violence or for those who have left an abusive relationship.  Referrals are not required.  Appointments are not always necessary.
  • Information on available options and services, counselling, medical, shelter, legal and financial counselling for women, children and adolescents
  • Parenting support for women parenting children who have witnessed/experienced violence in the home.
  • Activity based counselling for children
  • Support groups for women and children who have witnessed/experienced violence in the family.
  • Referrals to other social, legal, medical and housing services.
  • Advocacy and /or accompaniment to other agencies.
  • Confidential support.
  • Overnight emergency shelter. 

 

SECOND STAGE HOUSING

Six month to one year stay for women and their children who have left an abusive relationship and are in need of safe and affordable housing.  Applications are available at the Naomi Society.
 

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

  • Public education through presentations to schools, university, hospital, other social agencies, church and /or community service groups.
  • Training provided including offering student placements
  • Member of  Antigonish and Area Inter Agency Committee on Family Violence
  • Participation on a variety of committees within the community
  • Member of the Transition House Association of Nova Scotia

The Family Resource Centre is a non-profit organization which started in 1986. The centre offers a variety of programs and services FREE of charge to support the growth and development of all community members. 
 
One of the goals of the organization is to make the programs and services as accessible as possible by offering on site childcare and assistance with transportation.  Some of the services and programs include support groups, adult education opportunities, beginners pre-school, programs for youth (ages 5-12), parenting programs, adult skill development opportunities, annual pre-primary program, home visiting program, advocacy and referrals, public health services, mental health workshops and many more.
